There’s no better feeling than jumping in the car, throwing on your favourite tunes and hitting the great open road. A good road trip can take you to all kinds of weird and wonderful places and can turn a good journey into a great one. Whether it’s cruising along the Great Ocean Road in Australia or winding your way down the impossibly beautiful Stelvio Pass in Italy, the following are 10 of the best road trips in the world.
Seven Mile Bridge – Florida, US
If you’re looking to road trip USA then this place needs to be on your planner. Seven Mile Bridge is located in the beautiful Florida Keys and allows motorists and cyclists to cruise along the bridge for, you guessed it, 7 miles while taking in the stunning views of the Keys and the clear blue ocean around them.
Great Ocean Road Tour – Australia
If you want a road trip that takes in some of Australia’s most beautiful scenery, then a journey along the Great Ocean Road is an absolute must. The highway runs 151 miles (243km) along the south-east coast of Australia and provides breathtaking views of the coast line and the beautiful Tasman Sea. You also can’t miss The Twelve Apostles, it’s a must see.
Tianmen Mountain Road – China
The Tianmen mountain road is located in Hunan Province, China and winds 6.8 miles (11km) to the top of Tianmen mountain. There is also a cablecar option available that takes you straight to the top but that would mean missing out on one of the best car journeys in the world!
Furka Pass – Switzerland
You may recognise the stunning Furka Pass in Switzerland from the James Bond film Goldfinger. The road runs through the breathtaking scenery of the Swiss Alps and, at 2,429m (7,969ft) high, is one of the highest (and most beautiful) roads in Europe.
The Atlantic Ocean Road – Norway
The Atlantic Ocean Road in Norway is one of the most unique roads in the world. It has become famous for its sheer beauty and the fact it runs through an archipelago. The 5.2 mile (8.3km) long road takes in a number of small islands and skerries and offers breathtaking views of the Norwegian Sea.
Chapman’s Peak Drive – South Africa
Chapman’s Peak is a mountain around 15km from Cape Town and the 5 mile toll road that runs from the top of the mountain down to the ocean is worth the trip to South Africa on its own. The drive provides stunning views of both the ocean and Cape Town as you wind your way down to the coastline.
White Rim Road – Utah, US
If you want a challenging drive with stunning scenery then the White Rim Road in Utah should fit the bill perfectly. The rough dust track is best tackled by off-road vehicles and 4×4’s and runs over 100 miles through the breathtaking orange sands and cliffs of Utah.
Stelvio Pass – Italy
You may recognise the Stelvio Pass from motoring show Top Gear, who chose it as (put on Jeremy Clarkson voiceover) ‘the greatest driving road… in the world.’ The stunning road winds its way through the Italian Alps and rises to a breathtaking height of 2,757m (9,045ft).
Going To The Sun Road – Montana, US
In terms of natural beauty, few roads in the world can match the Going To The Sun Road in Montana. The 50 mile long highway winds its way through Glacier National Park and provides drivers with views of mountains, green valleys, glacial lakes and cedar forests.
Sani Pass – South Africa
If you’re a nervous passenger, you might want to avoid a drive along the Sani Pass in South Africa. The nerve jangling road clings to the side of a mountain and the rough track and sheer drops mean that this journey can only be taken by serious off-road vehicles and 4×4’s. If you can stomach all of that though, the Sani Pass provides some of the best views of any road in the world.
