It may look like a scene from a cheap horror film but this small town in Australia really was engulfed by giant tumbleweed. The north-eastern town of Wangaratta saw a sudden influx of the, frankly brilliantly named, ‘hairy panic grass’, which grows at such a rate that it can engulf whole areas in just a few hours. The residents of Wangaratta woke up to find that their whole houses had been surrounded by the weed, with many struggling to even fight their way out of their properties. The weed is thought to have come from the surrounding farmland and the Wangaratta council are investigating why the grass has become so problematic.
