The pictures below might look like scenes from James Cameron’s multi-million pound blockbuster Avatar but these incredible rock formations are actually located a little closer to home than Pandora.
The Tianzi Mountains are found in the Hunan Province south east of China and they are one of the most stunning natural formations in the world. The columns were formed by thousands of years of weather erosion and are now the biggest tourist attraction in Hunan region. The shape of the landscape is so unusual it makes you feel like you are on a different planet.
The largest column is the 3,500ft (1,070m) tall ‘Southern Sky Column’ which is believed to have been the inspiration for the ‘floating mountains’ in Avatar. The view of the mountains on a misty day might have you believing you’re in Pandora itself!
